Book Review: The Christmas Pig by J.K Rowling

I have entered a new world. A world in which things that are often neglected and taken for granted, come alive. Some things are missed deeply by their owner, while others are just replaced and not cared for. Here is my latest book review, The Christmas Pig, by J.K Rowling.

Jack, a little boy, has gone through a lot. His father, and his favourite toy, Dur Pig. He soon got a new father and his new sister, Holly is not at all happy with him being part of her family. D.P (Dur Pig), is the kind of toy Jack would confess to. He would tell the toy everything that happened at the end of each day and hide him in the weirdest places, so that he would smell dirty. When his new replacement, The Christmas Pig (C.P) is given to him, Jack is quite annoyed and doesn’t like his new pig at all. Those weird buttoned eyes, those upright ears, his hot pink colour, he doesn’t look anything like good old D.P!

At midnight, before Christmas morning, all the toys come alive since Christmas Eve is the night of miracles. What follows is Jack and C.P’s daring journey to the land of the lost toys to bring back D.P. Will they make it?

There are many hidden things that we often come across in real life. The two adventurers had quite a journey in the land of the lost with plenty of obstacles in the path. But they overcame it with two things, friendship and perseverance! They met a lot of other ‘things’ along the way, including a poem which funnily spoke only in rhyme, a compass with attitude. They also met not just things a little trait with a big heart called ‘Hope’ and other emotions and even bad habits. Without friends to help, this journey would be hard. But perseverance which was present in Jack and C.P saved the two from danger.

C.P and Jack first hated each other, but during their journey to find D.P, Jack and C.P started bonding. When you first think you hate someone you get ‘pre conceived notions’ like my mother says, don’t tell her I copied that word! But soon, after you have spent some time with him/her, you will start to like that person. The cover is not the book!

When C.P sacrificed himself just for Jack to find D.P, Jack realized how mean he had been to C.P and decided to go rescue the pig from the loser’s lair. Together, they went back home. This proves the saying “You get what you give”. When you do something nice for a person or give him a present, you will be repayed that kindness by him some time later, but you should not expect it.

Hope, Kindness and friendship. This, as the book shows, is the spirit of Christmas!
